sweet. I can see you are progressing here.Your starting to add good riffs and follow sweet melodies. I like the clarinet sound sweet at the start there. took me on a trip back to the 70s for some reason. i like the atmosphere you create with your music its pretty good. i think this is cooked and ready for the main page it is short but its still sweet. 70
Thanks, listening back I think I gotta get the balance in volumes right,.. the strings to the left are a bit quiet,..as is the piano and bass, and the fucken vocals,.. horrid,.. I wish I could creep into your house in the middle of the night,..climb through the window with a scalpel in my mouth,..and make the switch,.. you'll wake up sounding like an asphyxiated bear in a forest fire,.. strings of a smoked bean. But, desperate times call for desperate measures, the site has been a little dry as of late,.. at such times any old filler will do, this is the best I can muster at this stage,.. aye just hope to get better.
i think this is better. I have heared some of your work where it sounds like you are trying to hack up the un hackable. It was almost like your signiture. But still i think this song is pleasant. Its not as scrambled as some of your other works. You have a weird way of making a song sound creepy. I think its a cool trate. Your voice is very low so maybe thats why people find it intimdating. You are either too high or too low and never the in between. Not saying its a bad thing.but it is what most people want. I can only recommend you tighten up the tunes a little make them sound like there ment to be there an consentrate on the lyrics which seem to be consistently strong.
Excellent comment mate,.. I think your absolutely right,.. the singing is my most major obstacle as, I can find ways to collectively learn and improve sound structure and verse structure,.. but the reed in ones own neck is a stayer, hence my above scalpel post. I tried in the lead vocal to find the middle-ground without resorting to falsetto, and ended up with the inconsistant, breathey, smokey tone,.. the 'creepy' tone, along with the amatuer structure and strange lyrics,.. lol, yes, it resonates a very strange atmosphere,.. not just partially due to musical inexperience and fragmented thinking. I guess it's a bit like Karl Pilkington, he tries to push himself to more than he's capable of, and ends up sounding rather bizarre, I'm not as silly but, I'm sure classic composing mistakes are present and riddled distinctively clear to baffling proportions when real talents listen to something like this.
The comments section is perfectly made for somebody like me, it's a thorough instruction manual. When I comment on others tunes, all I can do is suggest ideas, express preferences, or describe wether a tune hit the spot or not,.. but in reverse, I am in need of alot of help, lol,.. tutorials, reminders, training wheels, I'm a student, so please help, and do not hold anything back!..
Vocals at the moment, I got a choice between Rammstein, or Mimmie Riperton,.. the middle ground sounds like Rammstein fucking Mimmie Riperton,.. up progress.
I still find your stuff disturbing Mangrove.. Seriously creeps me out – but I like it. Gonna listen some more and give actual feedback later.. need to chew this one over..
Hahahaha, thanks Brad,.. Im only now beginning to realise what I've done , in a similar way Tim came to realise his 'Functable' song turned out to be gay,.. I guess if one mixes 'toy synth', 'night creeper percussion', and lyrics suggestive of a spider as a teat suckling new born through a mothers eyes, delivered by a toxic, cancerous voice,.. ….oops, creepyness is bound to happen, hahahaha!,.. hilarious, under the concerntration of creativity, only the fresh listeners can hear it in full, I'm still scrumpling up about bits and pieces, where as fresh listeners go,.. 'ooooooooooooo…..wtf….' …. hahahaha,… it's great entertainment all the way, I only hope you dont go to sleep with your ipod earbuds nestled in,.. you wouldn't want this one to shuffle up in dreamy mode…. 'Fucken Freddy Krueger cunt,.. thanks, gotta be at work in a couple of hours' …hahahaha
nice jack, and rofl at the comments above, the structure is cool, love the plucked synth guitar line and the vocals are really good on this, i think i've figured out why the "creepy" aspect keeps sneaking in as clearly this sounds like a happy melody but some of the synths, like the background strings blended with the bassline keep hitting the odd crazy note that sounds out off the melody range and i think thats what gives the "creep" effect, not the vox in my mind, your vox are different sounding but its the crazy blend of the verb'd strings holding one note melody structure and other things picking slightly different note structures over the top that sends absolute chills down my spine….in a good way of coarse….I specially like the background vox on this one with the main vox line, actually just thinking about this, could you try an experiment for us Jack? try just having the drums – plucked guitar – vox as a mix on their own? i think that would eliminate the creppy vibe instantly and prove the theory…..but sorry to get off topic, i really like the main melody and the vox in this, keep 'em coming mangrove….
Ahhh Yes, hahaha, you could certainly be right about the strings Daiyv, I continuously put strings into everything, infact just today, working on this current one I'm doing,.. I clicked the little green 'off' light, in fruity, to see what the track sounded like when taking each instrument away, and the tune never became so quiet as when I silenced the cheap 'orchestra', lol,.. they're very loud, and they do sound like they've got reverb and echo on them,.. I seem to always use the strings as a high and low guide for the melody and end up leaving them in,.. and I think your suggested experiment could definitely help, and will infact participate to do one without strings,..and cut the bundling splurge of instruments a bit, although it's a little late to remove them from the track I'm currently working on,..however the submission after the next one most definitely, I think there will be room to implement a little more panning variation when the strings in particular are gone.
When I think about effective and excellent drumming, your tunes always come to mind Daiyv, and so I've been influenced to treat the drums as the crucial piece that they are in this next track, I've learned to use them much better, soley thanks to the pointer you gave me when you were out here,.. about having the drums available up the piano roll to the left, it's made things much easier,.. thanks so much for listening and for your great advice aswell.
Oh and tell me, how much do you know about the mixing effects in fruity?.. I've tried tampering with them and they make it sound worse :(, so I usually just leave it raw,.. do you know of a good effect to try?..
I just found out there's been a glitch in my laptop soundcard that has been locking it onto 'rock' preset settings,.. and when I finally fixed it, and set it to normal, the song was virtually drowned out by the strings to the left,.. whoops,.. lol,.. contrary to my comment above,.. they DONT need a volume increase,.. fuck, that messed me up.
I dont think the string volume is the culprit.. more that they are panned so hard left.. they are a sole unique sound in the track, and have a drone about them that I think would be better suited more in the center of the mix (not totally center – maybe 10 off to one side).. That way you could have the more simmilar sounding piano and harpsichord panned moderately hard individually L and R, to play off against each other..
The lyrics are awesome – I think your leading the site in that department.. You have a real talent for massaging words into a mental picture..
The vocals are by far the best youve done.. Pitch is much improved and it comes across as a much more conducive package.. I think the next step in your vocal should be to try and emphasize some more emotion in the lyrics.. You seem to get stuck in a bit of a zombie syllable delivery which doesnt sell your awesome lyrics as well as they could be..
Overall I hear this as A: Creepy – not sure what it is but it weirds me out.. and B: a massive leap forward in your writing, performing and producing.. I think this could be tightend up with just a few well thought out panning and mix changes..
Thanks so much for listening and analysing thoroughly Brad,.. I'm a bit suprised that you and Daiyv dont mind these vocals,…urgh, to me, they sound far too 'dopey' and busted,.. so it's a rather pleasant suprise to find out they may not be as bad as I thought,.. the very first word,.. 'day-break' ,…right on the 'break' there's a clipping crunch that I couldn't get rid of, but because it happenned on just about the right word, I thought, oh well, maybe it'll lend a bit of percussion for that. I used the cheap keyboard for the ambience breaks, put it through a 'blur' and it sounded better than it ever has through fruity,.. I tickled a tin can during the first break, to hopefully describe the picture of a spider crawling around on the wall at night, doing his job while I'm in a slumber. This is actually a true story,.. 'Broodjer' ,.. was a good huntsman spider,.. very greedy,.. would bask on the computer screen at night to feed on the little critters attracted to the light,.. During a black-out,.. with just me and the torch,..something dropped onto my arm,..I thought it was a heavy beetle to begin with,.. nope, turns out it was a fucken great huntsmen,.. he didnt bite me though,.. but he did follow me around the house,..being the only light during a blackout,..lol we became friends ever since. I would go up and whistle 'beroooooooooodjer' between his fangs,.. and his little pedipalp feelers would move with the wind,..lol,..
As for tinkering with it more,… well,.. maybe far down the line,.. I've got two other songs I'm working on,.. I've really got a hold of the drums in fruity,.. problem is I went mad with them,.. and forgot about a sequential melody,..lol… now I gotta dissect it a bit.
Thanks again for the great advice Brad, I really appreciate it mate.
