DATE – Radio

This is the first real complete collaboration between Nate Rose and myself (Dave Jones), it started with us chatting and saying we’d like to try a “radio” type sounding track and then grew from there…started with a verse-chorus idea then Nate added a bridge idea, some vox and after plenty of back and forward action this is what we have…Would love to hear your feedback and ideas as always…

Sorry boys. 🙁 ………..2 minutes and 35 seconds of a strict regimented march, It was as dim as garfield’s eyelids, ….detailed I could see, but the wrigglers were stuck like a hatch on a globule of monotone mud,.. I always scream and cry about air and fragmentation, and this tune needed more air for the wingspan to breathe,.. but following 2:35 ya loosened up a bit,.. and my ears went from closed green beaks to open spritely flowers. Liked the way you signed it off,.. but the majority of the song seemed to be merely going through the motions, the lyrics were not as clear as I wished them to be, so I couldn’t interperate the sound in an alternative way either.

    33% ,..

This is awesome. I do agree slightly with the extremely clear music and the not so clear vocals.
I liked the vocal work it suites it nicely. I like the music too i think its catchy and if the vocals wont draw ya in the music will and vice versa..Its nice fellas i think ya should be proud…I had this one stuck in my head for a while today…Until some annoying _Travis song came on the radio..So i came running back to the computer played the song again and washed that shitty little song out of my head.
Its good and you can always do it again it aint goin no where…I have been having problems with my mic lately aswell….Ok Good stuff lads.

Catchy guitar riffs;I like the song. at 1:25 I heard some clipping coming from the left side.
I think I like the vocals, but Its hard to clearly hear them. What I do hear needs some work -either the room they were recorded in needs more treatment to not sound boxy, or the verb that was chosen added to much "room" sound. You might try a wide Q at around 500Hz and dip it 2 or 3 db to see if it brings the room tone down.

wow, ok thanks for the feedback hansford bros and DC, seems like polar opposites in the taste department… I claim responsibility for this mix, initially when i recorded the idea for this i thought the simple verse with the full chorus worked well together without really having to touch it much so i didn’t really have to add too much compared to other tracks, but the clipping was probably because i had trouble trying to get any volume out of the track in cubase without smothering it with compressor which i hate, my bad on the vocal mix, i think Nate’s vox are spot on with the melody, he did a few takes with harmony tracks for me to play with and i must have mixed the vox in so many times I’ve lost count but the room sound was still overpowering so i made the cardinal sin of pushing the vox back in the mix to compensate…bad move…the only thing i did to the vox track was EQ to pull up the high end to brighten it up, no verb was added so I’m not sure whats happening, I’ll definitely try your tip DC! to be honest though we thought we’d throw up what we had a get some feedback, i wasn’t really ready for the army of sound engineers reviews….lol but i guess a lesson learned… Plan on playing with this and updating, I’ll chat to Nate to see what he thinks but as it is I’m very happy with the track so far…

If you end up re-tracking the vocals, try hanging a thick blanket (moving blankets are good) or put something like a mattress behind the singer – this will help cut down on the reflections coming back into the mic. You don’t need to worry too much about what’s behind the mic if it is a cardioid mic as it should have enough blocking. The other thing I have learned with vocals is to try and put something that damped the reflections above the singer, especially if its a short ceiling – cotton batting words, or duct tape a feather pillow directly above the space between the singer and the mic. Guerrilla recording at its finest!

Well, I gotta say, despite my low mark for this one,.. it’s still approximately 18% better than the very best I have ever done, and could ever do, based on my own scoring criteria, so although it may seem harsh, it’s scored in a proper context.

Still did anyone see anything in this. I did i liked it and it was full of life..I I think you need to listen to this more than once.Despite room sound of the vocals i think this is a top song.

Everybodies brain is different fats, different tingles down the ear appeal to different people, it can happen to the very best,..I’ve given lowies, and highies to just about everybody,..except DC wave thus far,.. your trials of a bear tune had me digging a grave and plotting for your death,.. yet your collab judgment,.. and Clap,.. had me chipping away at a wooden shrine in your honour, licking it and oonga boogling around in a circle like a buck starkers soldier crab praying for rain.

I quite like the tune as a whole.. but after hearing other recordings of Nates voice, it seems this one is missing the high end sparkle and clarity in the recording that really captures the emotion of his voice. The music is recorded really well, well, for us hobby guys that is.. lol.. (DC is obviously leagues ahead of the rest of us in that department! – and i do take note of every tip he posts!).. Reminds me of Something for Kate. Has mass appeal but is still kinda edgy. If it was me i’d re-record the vox to try and get the clarity as I’m not sold that eq alone can pull the vox up enough to get the sparkle while still sounding like the original singer (Nate)..
Heres an idea: maybe you could shoot just the lead vox track through to DC, he could clean it up and let us know what he did and we could A/B the two? DCWAVE: would you be up for that? I’m sure your busy, but it would be a great little lesson for us.
I didn’t find the music repetitive as the vocals captured my attention. If they could be cleaned up it’d give the harmonies more depth and really sail the song along..
    do you agree?

    well folks
thatnks so much for the feedback for everyone, it’s really helpful to hear what people think about the song and how it was put together. i think a big issue is my recording setup….I run my mic into my presonus firebox…and for some reason the volume/input it picks up is low and I’m not sure why. I’m running a recording program called reaper…and i do have a few plugins I use to try and amp up the volume, mainly compression…a touch of reverb…and thats about it. So I do plan on re-recording the vox, and we’ll see if I can figure out a better way to get a straight forward good vocal. thanks again for the input.
